No matter your adoption goals, your journey begins with a home study. All individuals seeking to adopt must complete an approved home study by a licensed adoption agency.

We use a home study to assess the readiness of prospective adoptive parents as well as the suitability of their home. 

The Steps of Home Study Assessment

The home study assessment is an in-depth process that provides an overview of your life, family, and the ability to provide a safe and loving forever home for an adoptive child. Its steps include:

• Gathering personal and legal documents, including but not limited to birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, medical reports, and financial records.
• An autobiographical statement that includes: personal relationships, family relationships, motivation to adopt, key events, and what you learned from them.
• Criminal background clearances
• Social worker interviews
• Home visit
• Additional requirements will apply relative to the applicant

The home study process can feel invasive. However, all the requirements are necessary to complete the prospective adoptive parents’ home assessment. Adoptions Unlimited tries to make the process as smooth as possible.

Your home study takes approximately two months to complete after submitting your home study application; however, we offer expedited services for families wishing to have it completed sooner. Our domestic home studies are suitable for any adoption situation across the United States.

Once your home study is conducted and approved, you can be presented to potential birth parents by your child placing agency. If you are working with a child-placing agency other than Adoptions Unlimited, we will send them the home study.
